September 2011 Chess Carnival

This month's edition of the Chess Carnival is now up at the Hebden Bridge Chess Club site.  Well worth checking out, among other things the host has an excellent post on his experience at the British Chess Championships.

  1. Thanks for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed the carnival and my post on the British Chess Champs. It was a real learning experience for me. It's funny how, sometimes, doing something in a different way from usual (in this case the format of playing 10 games in 5 days) can lead to an insight into how you can improve your game.
I've been enjoying your blog for a while also. I've just downloaded Aquarium 2011 and am hoping that the publishing feature isn't quite as clunky as you seem to suggest it is. Surely it can't be as traumatic as copying an annotated game out of Fritz or Chessbase and into say Chess Flash or Chess Viewer? I hope not! I might do a review of all the available publishing options fir next months carnival. It's probably time someone did it.

  2. A post on the e-publishing options for chess games sounds like a great idea, I haven't seen anything similar to it.

Re: Aquarium 2011, I have the DVD version, perhaps the download version is more up-to-date and works on install. In my case I had to invest about a half-hour in Google searches to find out how to get the game publishing function to work correctly for a blog post. Turns out that a manual software update had to be found, downloaded and installed. Some html style links also need to be copied and manually added to your blog. Finally, for Blogger one needs to select the "use < br > tag" for line breaks option when posting, or there's a lot of white space at the top of the post. Hence my "not user-friendly" comment in the chess software post.

  3. Cheers. I'll aim to do a review for the next carnival then.

Don't suppose you could help me a bit further with the Aquarium 2011 publishing could you? I just tried the "Web Export" function for the first time and pasted the HTML code into my post. It didn't work. I'm guessing I need some code for the blog template but where do I go for that?

"Not user friendly" is right! Maybe I'm being a bit pedantic but shouldn't this stuff just work? Afterall the reason most of us use Blogger is because we don't have the time to mess about with coding our own website.

    Hope you can assist me...

  4. No problem, I think I'll do a separate post on it, so all the links etc. will work.
